The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette

2002 Pace Car Corvette

For the standard coupe and convertible there weren't many changes made for 2002. Two colors were discontinued, Dark Bowling Green Metallic and navy Blue Metallic. Electron Blue was a new color for the 2002 Vette. The automatic transmission cooler case changed from steel to aluminum. Floor mats were now standard. The magnesium wheel option was not advertised but some sets were sold as a $1500 option. The front stabilizer links were changed from rolled steel to aluminum for weight savings. This was originally intended only for Z51 and Z06 but was used for all Vettes to maintain consistency on the assembly line. Convertibles with the heads up display and the Z06 got a thinner windshield to save 2.65 pounds. Convertibles without the HUD and all coupes got the thicker windshield. The Z06 got 20 more horsepower and 15 more lb-ft of torque in its LS6 engine. Removal of the small pre-cats in the titanium exhaust allowed more flow, the large cats got new internals to do the emissions job. The mass airflow sensor and air flow was redesigned to allow more air into the engine. Valves in the LS6 are hollow, exhaust valves are filled with potassium and sodium for better heat dispersal. The Z06 aluminum wheels were redesigned to be spun cast instead of forged for a 1.3 lb weight savings per car. Corvette Z06 also got redesigned suspension and reworked steering to reduce the turning radius by 2 feet.
