The 1976 Corvette
The 1976 Corvette included a modified hood that changed the air induction system
to pull air from further forward over the radiator. This eliminated a howl that
could be heard in the cabin due to the old intake placement next to the front window.
"Astro Ventilation" was removed and the ducts on the rear deck were removed along
with it. Aluminum wheels were finally available and were installed on 6,253 Vette's.
A partial steel underbody replaced some fiberglass to improve rigidity and shield
the cabin from engine and exhaust heat. The new Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 Automatic
transmission available with the base V-8 was lighter and also improved shifting
at wide-open throttle. The Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 was kept with the optional V-8
and the torque converter was updated. The convertible option was no longer available.
A new badge on the tail of the car was all one piece instead of the seperate letters
used before. The new "sport" steering wheel was smaller than previous wheels, is
was also the same wheel used on the Chevrolet Vega this year. Because of this Corvette
owners complained and this is the only year for the Vega steering wheel.

The body number plate is located on the engine side of the cowl. The Fisher Body Style Number identifies the model of Corvette. 76-1YZ37 - Corvette Sting Ray Coupe The body number is the serial number of the body. The trim number represents the color of the interior, the paint color is the exterior paint color.
